The Cameo Safety and Reliability Analyzer plugin allows you to link Failure Modes to Actions in any stage of the modeling process. With this option, you can foresee any possible action-related Failure Modes, and add them to your model before starting actual safety and reliability analysis.

Failure Modes can be linked to actions in the following ways:

Linking Failure Modes to Actions in an Activity Diagram

The easiest way to link a Failure Mode to an Action is to drag it from the containment tree in the model browser to an Action shape in an Activity Diagram.

To link a Failure Mode to an Action in an Activity Diagram

  1. Open the Activity Diagram in which the desired Action is displayed.
  2. In the model browser, locate the desired Failure Mode, and drag it directly to the shape of the Action.

Dragging a Failure Mode to an Action shape specifies the Failure Mode as the value of the Failure Modes property of that Action. In addition, the Failure Modes property is automatically displayed in the compartment of the Action shape to which the Failure Mode was dragged, as shown in the figure below.

In this Activity Diagram, the Read sensor value and Control insulin delivery Actions are linked to the Drop in sensitivity and Voltage error Failure Modes. The Failure Modes are automatically displayed on the shapes of the Actions to which they are linked.

Usability tip

An Action can be linked to multiple Failure Modes. You can either select multiple Failure Modes and drag them to an Action shape all at once, or drag the Failure Modes one by one. The Action shape is updated accordingly, and displays all linked Failure Modes.

Linking Failure Modes to Actions in the Specification window

Since linking a Failure Mode to an Action specifies it as the value of that Action's property, this link can be defined in the Specification window of the Action.

To link A Failure Mode to an Action in the Specification window

  1. Open the Specification window of the desired Action.
  2. From the Properties list in the property group toolbar, select All, if this option is not already selected.
  3. In the general specification pane, on the right side of the window, click the Failure Modes property specification cell, and then click Edit.  The Select Elements dialog opens.

Removing the link between a Failure Mode and Action

If an Action already has a Failure Mode linked to it, you can now remove that link. To remove the link:

    1. In the Selected elements area of the Select Elements dialog, select the Failure Mode(s) the link(s) to which you want to remove.
    2. Click Remove. If you want to remove the links to all the Failure Modes shown in the Selected elements area, click Remove All.
    3. Click OK, and close the Specification window.
  4. On the left side of the open dialog, select the Failure Mode(s) you want to link to the Action.
  5. Click Add to add the selected Failure Mode(s) to the Selected elements area. If you want to add all Failure Modes contained in a specific Package, select that Package, and click Add Recursively.

  6. Click OK.
  7. Close the Specification window.

After following the procedure above, the selected Failure Modes are specified as the values of the Failure Modes property of the desired Action. In addition, the Failure Modes property is automatically displayed on the Action shape if that Action is displayed in an Activity Diagram.
