The entity-relationship diagram, as the name suggests, allows you to specify entities and relationships between them. It is useful for abstract domain modeling, to provide structure for data in the domain. It is much more abstract and implementation-independent than the SQL diagram, which shows the concrete implementation of the data structure in the database.
